The Distinction Between the Terms "Architecture" and "Planning"

This started as a response to a comment regarding a topic within the first phase of my essay, “The Nine Phases of Architecture”, but has evolved to address the difference that I perceived between the terms “architecture” and “planning”. The statement was
:

“Every time you engage a client, remember the simple premise of what a successful market is: it boils down to value communication.

This statement addresses a topic in the first of nine architectural phases that can be found at the url:

My response, however, became far more general as I thought about the client acquisition and design stages of architecture in relation to the more time-consuming phases of contractual definition and construction observation.

Architecture involves the mental process of "correlation" required to solve complex problems and relationships regarding shelter for our activities and survival; but it has limited planning and design to individual project commissions based on its contractual obligations, in my opinion. Urban design for blocks, neighborhoods, districts, cities, and regions has been more of a dream than reality limited by the multiple ownership involved and the lack of an adequate leadership language that can measure results, conduct evaluation, form conclusions, and lead others with a consistent mathematical language  as the basis for knowledge formation.

Architecture has been limited by the time required for the contractual definition of a project solution and the observation of its construction progress, as well as its client contract. Unfortunately, the effort has contributed to sprawl because growth limits have been promiscuously expanded with annexation and architecture has been limited by the property lines of its client.

In the future I believe we must build shelter for survival in consciously limited geographic areas on a planet that does not compromise with ignorance. The goal is to separate a parasitic Built Domain from the source of life it threatens to consume, agriculture and the Natural Domain. It remains to be seen if we can define the shelter needed while respecting the ecology involved. The effort needs expanded architectural, urban design, and planning authority, but this will not happen without a more credible leadership language.

I have derived the equations of urban design and incorporated them in forecast models to measure, evaluate, and predict the shelter capacity of land and its context implications based on the building design classification chosen. The intent of this leadership language is to establish the measurement foundation needed to build knowledge regarding the shelter capacity options associated with land. In my opinion, we cannot lead until we can accurately measure and evaluate the implications of these design decisions. I have discussed this in many essays at my blog, www.wmhosack.blogspot.com and have comprehensively discussed the opportunity in my book, “The Equations of Urban Design”. The url to all my books, including "The Equations of Urban Design" is:

I have had the temerity to call the search for shelter knowledge Tegimenics and the future accumulation of knowledge, Tegimenology. My intent has been to derive a leadership language of shelter capacity evaluation for Tegimenics and Tegimenology that can be used to build knowledge and guide the performance of many toward the symbiotic relationship implied by the term “steward”.
